Sloots Potato Breeding Company is a down-to-earth and skilled family business that has focused for decades on the development of disease-resistant potato varieties for the industry.
The foundation of the company was laid in 1968, when Roelof Sloots' father started breeding potatoes for the starch industry. Driven by strong agronomic convictions, a different approach was chosen even back then: not combating diseases with chemicals, but preventing them by developing strong varieties.

This vision, inspired by knowledge from the agricultural winter school, still forms the foundation of the company. After all, many of the diseases and challenges of that time are still relevant today. That is precisely why the focus has been on resistance breeding for generations. In 2005, Roelof Sloots took over the company and this course was further developed.
While the focus was originally on starch potatoes, the breeding program has since been broadened to include varieties for the chips and fries industry. In doing so, Sloots Aardappelkweekbedrijf responds to changing market demand without compromising on quality and reliability.
A defining characteristic of the company is development based on its own genetics. Varieties are selected for strong resistance, stable yields, and practical applicability in cultivation. This combination ensures solutions that not only work in theory but also prove themselves in practice.
An important milestone within the company is the Seresta variety — a name that stands for Sloot's First E-Resistant Potato. This variety grew into a proven and widely used variety within the sector. Seresta is now an open variety, but it still forms the genetic basis for further breeding.
The next generation is represented by Saprodi, a further development with improved resistance properties. This variety forms the basis for new crosses and future varieties, with which Sloots Aardappelkweekbedrijf continues to build a sustainable and future-proof assortment.
